Lowest Price Samsung NC10-14GB 10.2-Inch Blue Netbook - 6 Cell Battery

First off let me say that I loved the machine, if you use a seperate mouse then this is by far the best of the netbooks avail. today. I travel alot so using the NC10 while on a plane is tough w/o a seperate mouse. I am totally at a lost why Samsung installed such bad software/hardware on a PC that was designed so well.
Returned the unit and going back to my wife's 1000H until they improve it.

As a college student with a full courseload, I find this laptop fits my needs well: thoughtful and intuitive design, overall great usability / portability. I've heard a lot of arguments against the "underpowered" netbooks, but I find that with this and a desktop that I'm building, I'll have the best of both worlds -- power and performance where I need it (nerdy gaming at home) and portability for everything else. (All for cheaper than a 15" laptop compromise!)

I've actually been able to significantly cut down on my paper usage as well as back strain by keeping everything that I would normally put in my binder (notes, handouts, etc) on here and recycling the originals (I'm even considering scanning portions of my textbooks, but that's just my OCD acting up). Some things I've done:

1. Cut down the size of start menu / icons to save screen space
2. Started using Opera with the "standard slim" skin, which takes up signitifcantly less vertical space than firefox
3. tweaked trackpad settings & purchased a microsoft arc mouse
4. Got a portable DVD player sleeve that fits it perfectly (Belkin)

My only complaint is the speaker quality -- pretty bad, not very loud, but it's only a problem when I want to watch movies with someone else. I'll be using earphones or speakers with this.

As far as in-class use goes, I've found that it fits nicely on the ridiculously small pseudo-desks we have (although not enough space for the mouse) and typing is not obnoxiously loud. It's pretty snappy out of standby / hibernation, which is also a plus. It fits in my lap comfortably and I've had no problems staring at the small screen for hours writing a paper. Also, the fn commands are extremely useful and easy to understand. I regularly use these to adjust brightness, volume, check battery power, use standby, etc. I also like the relatively minimalist design of the white model -- I don't feel so ostentatious whipping this out during class. Battery life is as described.

The concerns I had before purchasing this have been absolved, and I'm glad I didn't wait for the slightly larger (and more expensive) nc20.Get more detail about Samsung NC10-14GB 10.2-Inch Blue Netbook - 6 Cell Battery.

I've had this machine for about 6 weeks now and have an unholy love for it. It does exactly what it is designed to do and does it well.
One of the major complaints with netbooks, in general, is funky keyboard layout and size. I have small hands and am a touch-typist and adapted easily from a split ergonomic keyboard to this one. The right shift key is in the correct position, which makes up for it being a bit on the small side. If you are a touch-typist with large hands, this may not be the machine for you.
Of course, with portability, you do have to sacrifice a bit of real estate on the screen. Even though it doesn't sound like the screen is that much bigger than the 8.9" netbooks, functionally, it is. While online, F11 will become your friend. Lengthwise photos on websites may be a bit cropped, but this hasn't been a problem for me.
I am not a fan of touchpads. I have a mouse that I usually use, however, the touchpad has worked fine for me. The only time it's been touchy is when the battery is dying.
As far as functional abilities, I have been able to download itunes while on another site. Connection speed seems to be more of an issue than the processor, especially when roaming with my Verizon wireless internet. It does bog down a bit if there are too many windows open or apps running, though. Since this is not a work machine, it hasn't bothered me. The large hard drive makes it great for storing and previewing photos on the go - great for vacation. I have Microsoft Office 2003 loaded on and the machine handles it well. The battery life is also good - I can reliably get 6 hours out of it, closer to 4 if I am running my USB DVD drive. It also recharges quite quickly and is Energy Star rated.
The fit and finish are good. The matte screen finish makes it easier to read. It is smaller and lighter than most textbooks. I carry this computer with me everywhere I go. If I was a student, I would definitely use this for taking notes in class.Get more detail about Samsung NC10-14GB 10.2-Inch Blue Netbook - 6 Cell Battery.
